In Queensland, all pool barriers must be a minimum of 1200mm high measured from the finished ground level on the outside of the barrier. This applies to all new pools and any pool barrier that has been modified or replaced. The requirement is set under the Building Act 1975 and the Queensland Development Code.
For our flat top pool fencing, the standard 1200mm panel height is specifically designed to meet this requirement. Our panels are pre-cut to QLD-compliant heights so you don't need to guess.
Yes – all pool barriers in Queensland must comply with AS 1926.1-2012 (Safety barriers for swimming pools). This applies whether you hire a professional or install it yourself.
Key requirements under AS 1926.1 include:
All products we supply are designed to meet these standards. If you're unsure, our team can walk you through compliance before you order.
Replacing a like-for-like pool barrier generally does not require a building approval in Brisbane, provided the new fence complies with current Queensland pool barrier standards.
However, you may need a building approval if:
We always recommend checking with your local council before starting work, as requirements can vary depending on when your pool was constructed. A licensed pool safety inspector can also advise you.
Yes. In Queensland, all pool barriers must be inspected and certified by a licensed pool safety inspector. This is required:
You can find a licensed pool safety inspector at the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) website. Once your DIY fencing is installed, book an inspection to receive your pool safety certificate. Our fencing is designed to pass these inspections when installed correctly per the instructions provided.
Frameless glass fencing uses thick toughened glass panels (typically 12mm) mounted directly into spigots drilled into the ground or fixed to a structural surface. There are no vertical posts between panels – the glass itself provides all structural support. The result is an unobstructed, premium look with maximum visibility. Ideal for pools where the view is the feature.
Semi-frameless glass fencing uses thinner glass panels (typically 8–10mm) supported by aluminium posts spaced every 1.2–1.5m. The posts are visible but slim and the glass panels sit between them. It's a more affordable option than fully frameless and still delivers a clean, open aesthetic.
Both options comply with QLD pool barrier requirements when installed correctly.
This depends on the design. Standard horizontal slat fencing cannot be used as a pool barrier because horizontal rails create a climbable surface – violating the non-climbable zone (NCZ) requirements of AS 1926.1.
Vertical slat panels can be used as pool fencing if they meet the following requirements:
If you're planning to use slat fencing around a pool area, contact our team and we can confirm which products are suitable.
